‘Excellence’ Program Helps Individuals With Disabilities

People with disabilities remain an untapped source in the country’s workforce, facing an unemployment rate of 70 percent.

NISH, a non-profit company that aids protect government contracts for companies that use individuals with impairments through the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Program, is working to alter the status. The organization has presented a new program wherein “Centers of Excellence” function as mentors. This is to various other firms to help them improve the top quality of the service. And the products they provide to the federal government.

The Javits-Wagner-O’Day Program is the largest single resource of work in the U.S. for people with specials needs. Commonly referred to as the JWOD program, it gives job opportunities for more than 45,000 people. This is to the people who are blind or have other severe disabilities.

Via the JWOD program, NISH deals with a network of more than 600 not-for-profit companies. This utilizes and educates people with handicaps.

The program originates from the Wagner-O’Day Act, passed in 1938, which gave job opportunities for the blind by permitting them to manufacture mops and also brooms for selling to the federal government. In 1971, Congress modified the act to include people with serious special needs. And also allow the agencies to supply services and items.

According to a recent Harris Interactive study, two out of 3 individuals with disabilities that are not functioning want to work, but the lack of chances and ease of access problems prevent them from finding employment.
